Once Again Technology: Medicine or Poison..??

As I am doing an MBA and part of that curriculum, we have a guest lecture on every Thursday afternoon. Last week, we had similar lecture where I got chance to meet this lecturer who is marketing and commercial director of one of the printing organization in UK. Thus, he made us come across one of the real time and very interesting case study of business where I felt like that somebody has stood up right up and asked me do you think you can find answer for everything then try to answer this one..??

Background of person: He works in Printing Industry where his organization just prints the books for top class publishing houses; which also includes distribution of these books to retailers or customers. They have several firm and big clients like Bloomsbury Publishing (Harry Potter Publisher), Penguin Publishing

Question: If you become a board of member of one of such printing company and company asks you to draw the strategy for next 10-20 years. What you will do? (Except selling)

I understood the concern and did try to answer it somewhat but honestly speaking even I am not satisfied with my own answer. So, I have decided to put forward the same question in front of you. I will be pleased if you have anything to share or answer on this.

For this, I had a deep look on their current strategy where I found they actually have only one competitor in current market but they have hell lot of problems coming over in future given as follows:
1. Digital printing technology (they have adapted this one now)
2. EBooks conversion from Physical books
3. Increasing love fever towards IPADS.
4. Continuous innovation in technology which are removing
5. Top class book maker somebody like Oxford Dictionary also stopped printing of books and asking people to subscribe online or have it in electronic format. Following the trend.
6. Social awareness towards nature adding fuel to it by saying stops the use of paper.
7. Adaption to climate changes policies and regulations

And so many..such problems has suddenly piled up against this SME scale businesses. Did anybody bother thinking any future for these people? Is government is the final answer for this question? The company, I am talking about is having more than 700 employees working hard to make produce best seller novels, best literature and all kind of books. Many of them earn all the joy and hand-to-mouth for their families from this organization only.

But as I mentioned earlier interestingly here in this case this company do see the possible threat upcoming for them but they don’t know how to answer them or may be don’t know what shall they consider because of these uncertainties or changes like if IPAD fever will increase or people will prefer having physical book to read for more reading satisfaction.  Frankly saying nobody knows which way the time and people will shift and hence what should be the risk strategy now or how long should they execute this current business? In short, how long they should keep producing books and does this upcoming new technology medicine or poison for their company?  Big Questions to answer..aren’t they..?

Perhaps, all I can say now is that only time can give the best answer for these questions.

  1. They should continue produce paper books as long as there is demand.

But, I think they should start investing heavily in digital printing. Because most of the reference books (reference only) will move to digital-only format sooner.

  2. @Sirji..problem here digital printing does not need big Printing company..any body can set up in their backyard...and problem here that all publication houses reserve the rights to change it in any format and now fear is that publication houses can set up their own bookyards..!!
One of my recommendation to them was set up digital and physical book library chain so that when people stop printing books, then people want physical books will approach their services.

  3. hmmm.. diversification is good one. But not everyone can do digital printing. Sure, people can make their own digital books but how they would distribute them and how they would protect their copy rights?

  4. I agree..diversification probably the right answer and digital printing is the one thing..they have already adapted and In the making of digital books, publication house don't need any printing companies. They can set up their own IT center quickly and can start online subscribing sell. Now for copyrights, they can do like Google where no one can edit book while reading it which will reserve their rights as well.

  6. Each coin has two sides...
Paper is going to become obsolete very soon. I mean we substituted paper with something electronic in all the possible fields, be it Cash, Ticketing, Letters or Books And Government Records. So its best to flow with the wind instead of crying for whats gone. They still have got at least 5 years before crash. Diversify.
And about the field, I always believe that manufacturing industries are at the mercy of technological advancements, where as service industry is the one which creates a lot more opportunities with technological progress.
Take the example of Japanese mills (clothing) taking over the Chinese market and outbidding Mumbai based mill industry with the help of Technological prowess while we still relied heavily on cheap labour.

  7. @Sandip..yup I agree you have made good point here but one of very recent survey in Europe has said that once people managed reach out their hand to IPADS and all..then their hunger to physical book will increase. Let me give u best example, in early 90's people used to say once all library comes on Internet, they will read all books on one machine..then they said they will do it when they will get laptop but nothing changed people still wants physical books.

Second thought you mentioned abt Service industry is also a very good one..but I will tell you one of the big secret of China and western countries. Did u notice why china's economy is one of the fastest growing..the biggest reason of that..their huge manufacturing industry in their backyard..(almost all the products are made in china..they exports all these products in whole globe) where as western countries like UK, US are trying business around services. Although, its having good profit margin for right now..but in long term it vanishes and then people try to setup manufacturing business which becomes very tough nut to break.
    Check this figure:
manufacturing share of UK economy is 12.4% and GDP growth as 0.71%
Manufacturing share of China economy is consistently around 55% with their GDP growth 9%.
Hence currently, here people are planning to bring back manufacturing businesses.

  8. Actually MFG or Service is an endless debate. And about physical books, I may advocate going digital to everyone but I myself still love to read it in paperback instead of on my laptop.
But sooner or later its going to change. maybe not by will but due to availability, convenience, pricing or the ECO factor.
About the figures, I admire your hard work. And china certainly needs a lot more work on standardization and quality. MFG and Infrastructure are building blocks of the country till its in the infant phase like India or China or any other developing nation for that mater. It takes 1 unit of resources (human) to produce a unit but at least 3-5 to service the unit (from R&D to Maintenance to Customer Support to Back Office ).
The debate may go on and on, but only time can tell the result.
By the way, how are you doing there? hows everyone at home?

  9. @Sandip..yes I agree there is no end to these debate but I just wanted to tell you that to gain max advantage in global economy, particular country needs good balance between MFG and Services..bcoz there is no Services until MFG produce something..For e.g. no network services until phones get manufactured.
BTW..all is well at my place and course is taking good care of me as always..u tell me..how abt u..?? howz ur course goin on at MET..hope u r havin fun and enjoyment as always..!! :)
